OneBeacon Insurance Awards Sixteen College Scholarships

OneBeacon Insurance Group has recently awarded sixteen $2,000 college scholarships: eight to the children of OneBeacon employees and eight to children of the company’s distribution partners. Recipients were selected based on criteria such as academic performance, leadership roles and participation in school and community activities.

Maritime Industry News: Dutra Group v. Batterton

The U.S. Supreme Court decided Dutra Group v. Batterton, No. 18-266, on Monday, June 24, 2019, finding plaintiffs are not able to recover punitive damages for unseaworthiness claims. In Batterton, the plaintiff was injured while working on a vessel and asserted several claims against its owner, including that that it was unseathworthy under general maritime law.

A Tour of NYC's South Street Seaport

This month, three of our Canadian marine colleagues visited the IMU team in New York City. In addition to a bit of work training, we welcomed them to the city with a tour of the South Street Seaport.  Our team, including one of our producer partners, was hosted by South Street Seaport Museum Director Jesse Lebovics and Executive Director Jonathan Boulware.

Float Plans; a Boater’s Note

A float plan is like leaving a note on the kitchen counter for your babysitter; it’s the boater’s version of a list of instructions on how to heat dinner, or a proposed plan for the day. A float plan is a safety precaution that you should prepare if you’re going to be out on the water for a while. Completing a plan before going out on the boat and leaving it with a reliable person is an important step to take, should they need to contact the Coast Guard or other rescue services.
