Each year the Canadian Board of Marine Underwriters (CBMU) presents their IUMI Conference Award to one new or young marine insurance professional in Canada, providing them the opportunity to attend and experience the annual International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI) conference. This year, the award winner is Danielle Jackson, an Intact Specialty Solutions marine underwriter, and a member of our North American marine team.
Danielle has been a marine underwriter for a decade. She began her career as a broker at various large firms and joined Intact in April 2017, while also completing her CIP (Chartered Insurance Professional) designation. Having a CIP designation is one of the many rigorous requirements for receiving the award. Other requirements include a long application with essay, 3-15 years experience as an underwriter and serving on at least one CBMU committee (Danielle has chaired two committees, the Communications and the Education Committees).
The award covers the cost of the conference as well as travel and accommodation. So in September, Danielle embarked on a 23 hour trip to the 2018 IUMI conference in Cape Town, South Africa. The conference attracts marine underwriters from all over the world and while English is the common language, the experience is a unique international view into the challenges facing the industry as a whole as well as the individual challenges faced in different countries. The main topic of this year’s conference was “Managing emerging risks and exposures—think the unthinkable.”
While many conference goers headed home when the conference concluded on September 19, Danielle was able to extend her stay and explore South Africa. She remained in Cape Town for several days before moving on to Camps Bay for some time at the beach and Johannesburg for a 3 day safari.
We are pleased to congratulate Danielle on her well-deserved and significant achievement!
